It was Howard Hendricks, professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, who said, “Every man should have three individuals in his life: a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy.” Naturally, this is applicable to both men and women, but for reasons of maintaining moral purity and to avoid temptation, such should be of the same sex. Hendricks continues:

A Paul is an older man who is willing to mentor you, to build into your life. Not someone who’s smarter or more gifted than you, but somebody who’s been down the road. Somebody willing to share his strengths and weaknesses—everything he’s learned in the laboratory of life. Somebody whose faith you’ll want to imitate.

A Barnabas is a soul brother, somebody who loves you but is not impressed by you. Somebody to whom you can be accountable. Somebody who’s willing to keep you honest, who’s willing to say, “Hey, man, you’re neglecting your wife, and don’t give me any guff!”

A Timothy is a younger man into whose life you are building. For a model, read 1 and 2 Timothy. Here was Paul, the quintessential mentor, building into the life of his protg—affirming, encouraging, teaching, correcting, directing, praying.

GORUCK Red, Light & Blue Compete!

Some things said about GORUCK:

“You’ll learn to lead, you’ll learn to follow, you’ll learn to put others before yourself. You’ll even learn to smile no matter what life throws your way.”

“You walk away from these events smarter, stronger, and with a greater sense of life not being all about you. You learn to solve challenging tasks as a group, and get to experience the elation associated with that kind of success.”

Here are a few pics captured by some folks shadowing us, we were out there for about 7 hours and covered about 7-10 miles carrying heavy things and doing random challenges.

Once they checked our rucks and gave some safety instructions we went to the “Welcome Party”. Basically it’s a bunch of PT (Physical training) for about an hour or so. The goal of this by the Cadre (Military Special Ops leader) is to break everyone down physically and mentally so they can build you back up… As a team. All of this was done with the Ruck (backpack) weighted with bricks (4 if over 150lbs, 2 if under) plus supplies, water bladder etc.  so about 25-30lbs for most.

gr2“Elephant walk”, we had to do it until the 25 or so people on my team were in complete sync with our steps in a circle. The cadre talked about how we need to think outside of the box to accomplish this since it was hard to see each other, we tried counting but didn’t really work then he talked about how when deployed it’s amazing how the environment around you can help. There was construction going on and some type of piledriver or something that was banging at a steady rate off in the distance so we yelled out to use that as our timing to get everyone synced.

  • While this was going on, one guy tossed his cookies so we had to move the circle. 😛 
  • Oh, and the Cadre is wearing the goofy panties because someone made an extra donation to Charlotte Bridge Home if he would wear them.

gr3Planks & bear crawls. Another guy almost passed out during this. While we all had hydration bladders you need to start hydrating at least a day before an event like this. During the Welcome Party I seriously questioned what I had gotten myself into.

gr4Making us go under the cold fountain at Romare Beardon Park, just to make us more uncomfortable. It was so cold it actually took your breath away when it first hit you. Probably would have felt good if we did this event during the hot weather we are having now.gr5Carrying the “litter” (Military stretcher) It had a few sandbags weighing from 40 to 120lbs and 10 gallon water jug (about 80lbs). Later on in the day we would miss a “time hack” (when they tell us to be a certain place by a certain time) so each team had a “casualty” where they basically point to someone and say you’re dead get on the litter.gr6Always an honor to carry the flag and it’s a little break from carrying the log like the guys behind me. Although even the flag pole is weighted. (25lbs I think)gr7 gr8We missed a “time hack” so they made us get into the fountain at Marshall Park and sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” as punishment. I can’t even fully describe how nasty it was. There was some kind of algae or something that kept grabbing us as we walked through it. I will spare you any other details, but will just say I had an open Powerbar in my pocket that I decided to just throw away.gr9The teamwork and bonding was amazing, people switching in and out to give breaks to each other while we were carrying all the weights like the water jug, sand bags, etc.gr9bEarning the patch at the end from Cadre Garret (Army Special Forces). Seeing the team go from a bunch of individuals to a team working like a well-oiled machine was amazing. It was always about what can I do to help the team accomplish the next goal or challenge.

Along the way we also got to hear from an Army Ranger who was part of the team involved with Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down movie), a Marine that served in Dessert Storm and a Vietnam Vet at the Vietnam Memorial Park in Charlotte. To hear their stories was humbling to say the least.

It was an amazing experience and I am (sort of) looking forward to doing a GORUCK Tough, which is an overnight, 14 hour challenge next year.

The best part is we raised $18,400 for the Charlotte Bridge Home which helps our heroes returning from active duty get plugged back into the community, jobs etc.


GORUCK! Go what?!

Some basics:

(Bear with me for those new to this)

A rucksack is basically a backpack. GORUCK is a company that makes rucks and other products and have also created challenges that are team building endurance events based on military special forces training.

Here is their description:
Inspired by the most elite training offered to Special Forces soldiers and led by Green Berets, a GORUCK Challenges is a team event and never a race. GORUCK Cadre build each class into a team through collective conditions of mental and physical exhaustion. Classes are small, camaraderie is high, smiles are plentiful, and teamwork is paramount. (I’m still wondering about the smiles part)

The GORUCK Cadre have one main task: to teach the leadership lessons they’ve learned serving in the nation’s most elite units, in the world’s harshest environments.

So what am I doing?

GORUCK Light which is 4-5 hours and covers about 7-10 miles with about 20+ lbs of bricks & other items in the rucksack.

Light does not equal easy, it is just a shorter time/distance.

Ok, why am I doing this #CSAUP (Completely Stupid & Utterly Pointless) event?

Reason 1: GORUCK & F3 support our Veteran heroes & this Red Light & Blue GORUCK supports the Charlotte Bridge Home specifically. Charlotte Bridge Home helps Charlotte veterans successfully transition home after military service by identifying their education, employment and healthcare needs and connecting them to available community, state and federal resources.

I also have friends that are in the military now and I have the utmost respect for those that serve for my freedoms, and knowing how lazy I grew up (see below) and how easy I had it, I feel like I need to do this knowing it will help those returning heroes in some way.

Reason 2 (The more personal reason I wanted to do this.): 
Growing up I was raised by my mother, without many responsibilities or consequences. My father was very passive, lived far away and was not part of my life much over the years, for whatever reason. As I have grown older, gotten married and become a father, I want to change the pattern of what I learned. I didn’t want to be a divorced, passive man that lets life pass by. I want to be a man, husband, father and friend that honors God with my words and actions

While I have made strides, I can still see how being raised as I was bred that response deep into me. Nature vs. Nurture is an interesting thing because while I mentally don’t want to be that way, it is my tendency, and I struggle with it more than I would like. As a kid/teen, I was always laid back and went with the flow, I was never pushed or challenged, and things always seemed to work out for me which made passivity easier.

A good friend/F3 brother said once. “I need to defeat my worst enemy… myself.”

This is so true, and I need to be conscious of this daily to make lasting changes.

In August of 2013 (A little over a month after starting F3), I saw a post on the website talking about a custom F3 GORUCK Challenge. As I read through the post on the site (here when you have time), especially some of the 1st hand accounts, I couldn’t help but feel a stirring inside.

I think this stirring was knowing I have never been challenged physically or mentally like that, or at all really, and I felt like something was missing inside. Maybe it’s that “hunter/protector” people say men are born with inside that never saw the light of day in my case. That stirring could also just be knowing that while I have daughters, more importantly, I have a son that I don’t want following my poor habits. I will never be a perfect father but I don’t want him to look at me as a passive dad like I did with my father. I want, with God’s help, to mold him into the best man he can be and I need to model that as much as possible. I admit there are more important places to model that day to day, but for me, I also needed to do something where at the end of the day I can say I was challenged beyond what I thought I could ever do mentally or physically. I feel like it will help break some chains of my past that hold me back and hopefully in the process help me continue to take needed steps to be the man, husband and father I want to be.

Here is a video of the F3 Custom GORUCK Challenge. The “Light” is what I am doing, which is this but on a smaller scale as described above. My goal is to move up to a Challenge, hopefully next year.

F3 Union County Expansion

So this F3 thing I raved about in my last post is growing like the weeds in my yard. If you have not been by my yard lately that means big and fast! (At least the weeds are green)

In the process of being asked to launch a weekday workout in Union County we were asked to actually make it a full blown region. This would cause us to look at not just one new workout AO (Area of Operation) but thinking long term of how we can grow to various days/times/locations.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

That is always a great verse and many times our plan is not His, and many times our plan “B” is His plan “A” so we need to be careful how hard we hold on to our plan.

It is crazy how we think we know best.
Like when my kids would be playing ball and it bounces in the street, their first thought and focus is all about getting the ball but as a parent we see the big picture and yell out to them “STOP! Make sure no cars are coming!”

We can get so focused on what we are involved in that we lose sight of not only impending danger but the good things God has for us.  So…
